With what little time I had
I became the gallows man
I understood it was the final way to fail
So this rope is not for sale
I am a good and honest man
I made it quick and clean with a steady hand
But duty killed me in the end
When I measured up a friend
I know I'm in the shadows
I've fallen for the gallows
Be glad that you don't have those
Visions of bodies swinging
There's no panic before the hood
Breaking necks for the common good
A shorter way to sleep in Pierrepoint's hands
Though soft and gentle his commands
He was a good and honest man
He made it quick and clean with a steady hand
He treated death so decently
He could hang me
